Yoga at Casa Natalia in San Jose del Cabo

Unfortunately we couldn’t work out dates to visit Casa Natalia in San Jose del Cabo on the Baja California peninsula of Mexico despite their kind invitation. We’re keeping them on our list of Mexico yoga retreat centers, and we thought we’d also just share a little bit about what we know about Casa Natalia.

This is a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of San Jose del Cabo’s art district. The folks at Conde Naste Traveler obviously think rather highly of it, as it usually ranks among their favorite hotels in Mexico. It won the Best Hotel in Mexico category in 2008-2009.

Casa Natalia offers Kundalini yoga classes three days a week, and is also open to groups.

Rates for accommodation vary by season. Find out more about Casa Natalia on their website.

Mexico Yoga Retreat Itinerary Finalized – ...

Last night, Bari sent out emails confirming dates with the Mexico yoga retreat centers, bed and breakfasts, resorts, and other places that offer yoga in Mexico on the last leg of our tour.

When we had planned this project, we had hoped that 10 or 12 retreat centers would take us up on our offer, and we would have a month on the road in Mexico visiting various yoga retreats.

But as you can see from our Mexico yoga retreat list, we have a few more than twelve places to review. We are taking three full months for our yoga journey, and a fourth to complete our Mexico Yoga Retreat Guidebook.

Look for it on bookshelves in January 2011!

Prana del Mar

After La Duna, we’ll leave La Paz for Todos Santos and head to Prana del Mar, one of the best-know yoga retreats on our journey. Prana del Mar is located a few miles north and west of Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific coast of Baja California.

According to their website:

“We invite you to experience Prana del Mar, a beautiful beachfront retreat & wellness center located at the southern tip of Baja, Mexico.

“Spend the day walking barefoot on miles of stunning beaches, practicing yoga in our airy studio, catching waves at one of the nearby surf breaks, riding horseback along the coast, hiking the rugged mountains, or lounging in the swimming pool.

“Renew and refresh with a deep, healing massage, a restorative aromatherapy treatment, a soak in the hot tub, or a nap in a hammock.

“Watch the sun sink into the Pacific as you dine on fresh, delicious – often organic – Mexican and international cuisine, sip the best margaritas of your life, laugh with friends new and old, and then admire the star-filled sky as you wander the path back to your suite to sink into a plush pillow-top bed, lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves breaking on the beach.”

All of that sounds great to us. We can’t wait to visit and give you the skinny. Be sure to check out the beautiful photos taken at Prana del Mar.

From Prana del Mar we’ll go to Cabo and take the ferry to Mazatlan.

First Stop: La Duna

To bear the doldrums before our yoga trip to Mexico, we’re going through the websites of the retreat centers we’re visiting and drooling over the photos.

We’ll be driving from Tennessee to the San Diego area. Then we’ll get through the border as quickly as possible (and in daylight, mind you) and drive down the Baja California peninsula.

Our first stop on our extended tour of Mexico yoga retreat centers is La Duna Eco-Retreat in La Paz. According to the website:

“La Duna is a unique place of renewal
in a majestic cardon cacti desert and
the open blue horizon of the sky and sea.

“Eco-Retreat center with the vision of a sustainable life in the Southern Baja California peninsula, La Paz, Mexico.

“It is a place to visualize positive ideas outside the routine of every day life. Our supported activities in water and land invite you to experience nature at its best.

“Selected locations at or near our Center enrich the visitor’s opportunities to find peace, harmony and joy.”

Here is a video:

We’re looking forward to sharing more with you once we have the opportunity to visit in person!

Mexico Yoga Retreat Planning

Bari and I are now putting together the itinerary for our extended working yoga vacation in Mexico. We will visit approximately 30 retreat centers, resorts, hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, ashrams, and jungle camps over two months or so.

It’s looking like we will cross the border into Baja California and spend a couple of days driving down to La Paz and the Cabo area, where we have two places to review. From Baja we’ll take the ferry to Mazatlan, then drive south to Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit for a few nights.

Further down the Pacific coast, we have several nights on the Costa Alegre of Jalisco. From there we’ll head inland to San Miguel de Allende, Patzcuaro, and Cuernavaca. Then back to the Pacific coast for yoga from the Ixtapa area down to Acapulco and the Oaxacan beach towns of Mazunte and Zipolite.

Once we’re finished in Oaxaca, we’ll head to San Cristobal de las Casas for a few days, pass through Palenque, and then up to Merida in the Yucatan peninsula (hopefully we’ll be there for the weekly Thursday night dance party when they close the streets).

From Merida we’re off to Izamal for a night or so, then to the Caribbean. First we have several nights on Isla Holbox, then we’ll stay in Cancun a few nights before heading to Akumal and Tulum.

From Tulum we have a decision to make — head home before Christmas or continue our yoga retreat tour from Belize to Panama.

On the way home we’ll stop at a retreat center in the cloud forest of Veracruz. We’re excited about our journey. Thanks to all who are sponsoring our trip!

2011 Mexico Yoga Retreat Guide

yoga in Mexico

See photo credit below

We’re beginning work on our 2011 guide to Mexico yoga retreat centers, which will be sold on Amazon and at other locations.

The 2011 Mexico Yoga Retreat Guide will be a resource for independent travelers as well as for yoga teachers looking for the best places to lead group yoga vacations in Mexico.

Inclusion in the guide is free, simply fill out the form and your center will be added to the list of Mexican yoga retreats.

If you would like a full chapter dedicated to your center, that is also free, but we will need to visit first in order to write reviews, conduct interviews, sample classes, and take photos for the guidebook. Please contact us so we can arrange a visit in the autumn of 2010.
